The association Kolding Miniby was founded in 1996 by 17 enthusiasts with the aim of recreating Kolding as it looked in 1860-1870 on a scale of 1:10. Today (year 2019), the association has approx. 280 members, of which approx. 60 active.

The mini-city in Geographical Garden was officially inaugurated in 2012 and is still under development. Pr. 2021 is set up approx. 450 - 500 of the planned 700 buildings. The remaining buildings are expected to be erected on an ongoing basis until 2026.
