Adler House

Distance: 80.08 Km

The gate building in the middle of Middelfart, previously belonged to Hindsgavl Castle

Adlerhus was the gateway to Hindsgavl Castle.

The architect of the distinctive red-painted building is unknown. The red color reappears at Grimmerhus, which today houses the CLAY Ceramics Museum. Grimmerhus has back in time functioned as a boarding house, and also belonged to Hindsgavl castle.

Hindsgavl Castle was built in 1788 by Christian Holger Adeler and his wife Karen Basse Føns. At that time, Middelfart town and the estate Hindsgavl were separated. It is only later that the city has come closer to the estate.

The name of the building, Adlerhus, is presumed to be connected to the founders of Hindsgavls Castle, or is it a discharge of the streets Adelgade or Algade, which is located near Adlerhus. On the gate building is an old coat of arms, belonging to the genus Basse Føns.

Adlerhus Allé is located on the western outskirts of Middelfart and is a sight to behold. It extends from Vesterløkke Allé and out through the redwashed gate building Adlerhus. Adlerhus was until 1921 the residence of the castle manager at Hindsgavl Castle, and then formed the boundary between the town and the castle, and the 2 kilometer long stretch of Adlerhus Allé and Hindsgavl Allé, was all the way adorned with an avenue. Today, Brovejen and the railway to the Little Belt Bridge cut through the old facility.

Kastanjealléen between Adlerhus and Vesterløkke Allé was protected in 1946. The avenue is still standing, but is gradually reaching an age where a replacement can be considered. The avenue west of Adlerhus and outside the conservation area was replaced with new trees in the 1990s.
