Picnic with a view of the Little Belt

Old Castle, at the large rampart in the meadow west of the current Hindsgavl Castle, are the remains of the original Hindsgavl Castle, which was built as a royal castle, probably by King Erik Klipping, in approx. 1260. But only in 1295 is the castle mentioned in connection with the Norwegian king, Erik Præstehader, and the Danish king, Erik Menved, making peace here.
The castle functioned in war and peace as a surveillance site for passing ships and protection against enemy intrusion from Jutland.

In the Middle Ages it consisted of a courtyard, drawbridge with gate and a small barn by the beach. In the 1600th century new wings were added by King Christian IV, but in 1657 - 1660, during the Swedish War, the castle was ravaged by the Swedes, and in 1692 part of the tower and the ladies' room slipped into the sea during a storm.

After this, the castle was sold to a private person, and in 1784 the new Hindsgavl Castle was built.

You will find the ruin of Hindsgavl castle as follows: you walk through the park until you reach the gate. From there you go out on the meadow.
