Already on arrival in the area you will sense the strict symmetry of this facility

Teglgårdsparken - A city in the city

“The mental institution at Middelfart”, which was the official name until 1911, was built from 1884-88 by building inspector Vilhelm Valdemar Pedersen. The city within the city was self-sufficient with, among other things, its own gas and waterworks. In a park of 36 ha, he placed a grandiose strictly symmetrical axis-fixed plant in the sober Italian Renaissance and with great richness of detail. The facility consists of 21 buildings, grouped around a main building that housed the administration, church hall, banquet hall and chief physician's residence.

Other buildings in the central axis of the complex housed the various finance functions. On each side, the patient buildings were grouped: to one side for men, to the other for women. The only buildings that did not submit to this schedule were the epidemic ward and the chapel, both of which were pulled slightly away from the main facility. Since then, various additional buildings were erected, including staff housing and tuberculosis station, which were grouped around the original complex and which in part respected the original layout.

You can read more about the hospital's original park and garden facilities here: Teglgaardsparken

The place is today a thriving small town in the city with modern businesses, housing, school, state and educational institutions.

Psychiatric Collection (Psychiatric Museum)

The Psychiatric Collection is housed in Teglgårdsparken, in one of the former patient buildings at Middelfart Mental Hospital, which shows an exciting exhibition about everyday life and conditions at the institution from its establishment in 1888 to its closure in 1999. The beautiful surroundings overlooking Fænøsund were carefully thought out into the then treatment of the mentally ill, as a means of giving the mind peace. The museum is a fascinating journey into the everyday life and conditions of patients and staff, built in one of the old wards. Here you can see instruments, furniture from living rooms and living rooms, clothing, etc.

Authentic experience with sound effects

As you walk around the exhibit, the integrated sound effects provide a highly authentic experience of the museum. The sound effects have been recorded in collaboration with previous patients.

At both Middelfart Museum, Psychiatric Collection and Henner Friiser's house, a single ticket is sold, which gives one entrance to all the exhibition venues.
